The design was created by consultancy firm, Atkins, as part of a competition conducted by the Authority for the new marine transport stations, which will link commuters from Business Bay to Jumeirah on completion.
A solar-panel studded canopy feature resembling the historic fishing and pearling heritage of the region has won an RTA-run competition for marine stations along the Dubai Canal.
The submitted concept features a large translucent canopy over each station, with photovoltaic panel incorporated on the roofs which will offer the stations with power supply at night.
“The sustainable design aims to generate its own power and hence reduce operational cost and reflect RTA’s commitment to the environment. We are now looking at the possibility of 3D printing some of the station structure modules,” Adrian Lindon, Atkins Fellow and Director of Architecture said.
Construction of the marine stations is expected to start in 2019.
