Construction has begun on the tunnel portion of the Dubai Metro line extension to the site of Expo 2020 Dubai.
HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, attended a ceremony today where he officially launched a 100 metre-long tunnel boring machine named Al Wugeisha Expo 2020, according to Dubai Media Office.
Route 2020 will extend the Dubai Metro Red Line by 15 km from Nakheel Harbour and Tower Station to the site of Expo 2020. The tunnel portion will stretch for 3.2km from Discovery Gardens to The Green Community at depths ranging from 12.5 to 36 metres.
The contractor completed preparations earlier this month for locating the tunnel boring machine at Al Furjan at a depth of 12.5-metres. This involved creating a rectangular shaped concrete wall supported by horizontal steel supporters.
Al Wugeisha Expo 2020 is scheduled to cross the underground station near Jumeirah Golf Estates in January next year with all tunnel drilling works expected to be complete in December 2018.
Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) awarded The Expolink Consortium with a contract to build the 15km metro line extension in June 2016, and the ground breaking ceremony in September 2016.
The first of the new Dubai Metro Rolling Stocks will arrive in July 2018, and construction works for the metro viaducts will be completed in November next year.
Construction of Route 2020 will be completed in July 2019, and the trial run of the metro will start in February 2020.
